A Power Station case
study.
Building On Good Ideas In The Leisure Sector
The customer was a major hotel group that wanted to announce
a suggestion scheme to over 12,000 staff. The Power Station were brought in to
develop the right infrastructure to support the scheme on a long-term
basis. In developing the solution we also broadened the remit of
the programme, highlighting a number of other benefits that would
accrue if the right approach was taken:
- Encourage staff ownership of corporate goals
- Build enduring cost consciousness
- Provide platform for structured reward and recognition
- Capture knowledge, creativity and experience of employees
- Establish new communications forum
- Build and re-enforce employee loyalty
We then developed a programme structure that was geared to become
a part of the organisation's culture, stimulating management and
employee commitment and adding long term value. Critical success
factors were identified:
- Senior executive champion
- Highly visible launch
- Enthusiastic scheme managers
- Trained evaluators
- Simple and effective idea submission/evaluation process
- Structured measurement of success factors
- Stimulate regular ideas flow
- On-going communications and PR activity
- Appropriate reward and recognition
Particular focus was given to evaluator training as the need for
clear and prompt idea evaluation was seen as absolutely vital.
Another important consideration was the need to seamlessly integrate
the scheme within the existing staff benefits programme.
In return for a relatively small initial outlay, the client can
look forward to significant long term cost benefits, as well as
many other exciting initiatives that result from having provided
a structured platform for ideas. Beyond that they have a programme
that helps foster a feeling of belonging, with employees feeling
valued and recognised.
